My name is Jackson Ward. I’m a 25 year old bricklayer’s labourer from Newcastle, New South Wales.
I wake up, build a bit more of a house, come home and then I paint. It could be when I’m pushing a wheel barrow or on the drive to get lunch for the other guys, the next painting always comes to me. I only get to see it for just long enough to remember it and I do what I can to bring it to life.
At first, I would try to complete one painting a year but through a lot of encouragement from friends and family I’ve become driven just by the fun of painting. It’s a passion, it’s what I love. I originally would only paint on MDF board. I felt at home using it due to my construction background but switched to canvases which really brought out a vibrant texture in my work.
I’ve always been interested in art and I can’t explain my draw to portraiture, it’s just always what I’ve turned to when I need a subject. I take a great influence from Andy Warhol’s use of famous faces and historical figures and present them in a style that I’ve worked on for many years.
The subjects I choose are picked from a wide range of fields. Musicians, Actors, Artists…anyone. The only physical requirements are usually good hair or a beard and no smiles. If you want to be a part of this gang, you’ve got to follow the rules.
I serve the paint.
