How to achieve a Japandi Style Interior with Art

If you’re a fan of Scandi and / or Japanese style interiors, you’re going to love the newest ‘East meets West’ twist on these two pared back styles.

'Japandi' is the term coined to describe the fusion of the simple, traditional Japanese wabi-sabi style and the easy going Scandinavian style … and who doesn’t love a good fusion?

While light, open Scandi style interiors are elegant and uncluttered with natural pale timbers and a minimal colour palette, Japanese style is rooted in tradition achieving balance and tranquility while embracing imperfection.

So how do you find art to complement a Japandi style interior?

You’ll be mixing dramatic darks and light timbers with beautiful muted pastels to achieve a relaxed, easy going space so think along these lines ...

Japandi Style Art  Choose simple art  - think less is more.

Japandi Style Framing  Light timber, black stained timber or black aluminium frames suit the Japandi style perfectly. Also consider a wide white mount board to give your art some breathing space.

Japandi Style Colours  Choose art that is monotone - black and white or with some deeper navy tones. Also include some muted colours such as smokey grey, faded blue, pastel emerald or pale dusted pink.

Japandi Style Craftsmanship  Look for clean lines and flawless craftsmanship but also appreciate that there is beauty in imperfection.

Japandi Style Mood  Light, natural and playful. Heavier works should be lightened by a pale timber frame and white mount board.

Japandi Style Subject  Add elements of nature and organic shapes. Perhaps a nude, rocks, twigs, leaves, grasses or water.

NOTE  Don't think Japandi is a fad. Japandi style is so well suited to the Australian lifestyle and much easier to achieve than either the pure Japanese or Scandinavian style. This flexible new trend is predicted to become a timeless movement.
So go on, explore and enjoy creating your own version because Japandi is here to stay.
